Pneumonia Vaccination

Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) Vaccination

Pneumococcal disease is caused by a bacterial infection and can lead to serious illnesses including pneumonia, bloodstream infection (sepsis) and meningitis. Vaccination helps protect against severe disease and complications, particularly in people at higher risk.

Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), pneumococcal vaccination is funded for eligible groups in Australia.

Pneumococcal vaccination is recommended and funded for adults aged 70 years and over, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 50 years and over, in accordance with current eligibility criteria.

Pneumococcal vaccination is also part of the childhood immunisation schedule under the NIP, with funded doses provided for infants and children from early infancy. Additional doses may be recommended for some children with medical risk conditions.

People of any age with certain medical conditions that increase the risk of serious pneumococcal disease may also be eligible for funded vaccination.

To book a pneumococcal vaccination, please contact reception on 03 5981 1000.
